In-Office Hysteroscopy in Anchorage, Alaska

A minimally invasive approach to evaluating and treating abnormal uterine bleeding, polyps, and certain fibroids.

Heavy, irregular, or prolonged bleeding can have several underlying causes. At Borealis LIFE, we offer in-office hysteroscopy to help identify what may be happening inside the uterus and, when appropriate, provide treatment without a traditional operating room procedure.

Our physicians work with you to understand your symptoms, review your options, and determine whether hysteroscopy is appropriate for your care.

What Is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your physician to examine the inside of your uterus using a thin, lighted camera called a hysteroscope.

The hysteroscope is passed through the vagina and cervix, allowing your physician to see the uterine cavity directly without abdominal incisions.

Depending on your individual needs, hysteroscopy may be used to diagnose a condition, collect a tissue sample, or treat certain abnormalities during the procedure.

What Can Hysteroscopy Treat?

Hysteroscopy may be recommended when evaluating or treating:

  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding: To investigate possible structural causes of abnormal bleeding.

  • Uterine polyps: Growths in the uterine lining that may contribute to irregular bleeding.

  • Certain uterine fibroids: Fibroids that extend into the uterine cavity may be suitable for hysteroscopic removal.

  • Abnormal findings on ultrasound: To examine the uterine cavity more closely and help guide treatment decisions.

Not every fibroid can be removed hysteroscopically. The size, location, and characteristics of the fibroid help determine which treatment options are appropriate.

Why Consider In-Office Hysteroscopy?

For eligible patients, performing hysteroscopy in the office can offer several advantages compared with procedures performed in a hospital operating room.

These may include:

  • No abdominal incisions

  • The ability to evaluate and sometimes treat a condition during the procedure

  • The possibility of avoiding general anesthesia

  • A shorter recovery period for many patients

  • Care in a familiar office setting

Some conditions require a different surgical approach. Your physician will discuss the available options and recommend an appropriate setting based on your medical needs and preferences.

What to Expect

Your care begins with an appointment to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any previous imaging or treatments.

If hysteroscopy is recommended, your physician will explain the procedure, discuss available pain management options, and help you prepare.

During hysteroscopy, a small camera is guided through the cervix into the uterus. Your physician can examine the uterine cavity and, when appropriate, use specialized instruments to perform treatment.

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed. Mild cramping or spotting may occur afterward, and your care team will provide instructions about recovery and when to resume normal activities.
